NUJ Threatens To Withdraw Services Over Attacks
Members of Nigeria
Union of Journalist (NUJ) Rivers State Council have condemned what it describes as the serial attacks on its members in the state.
The union particularly condemned the attack on crew and reporters of Channels TV at Bori, headquarters of Khana Local Government Area of the state at the Save Rivers Movement (SRM), rally last Sunday.
In a communiqué at the end of an emergency State Executive Council (SEC) meeting of the council in Port Harcourt Monday, the union recalled that similar attacks were melted on some journalists working with TV Continental, Sun Newspaper, RSTV, Rhythm 93.7 FM, among others.
The group stated that journalists are professionals carrying out their duties as guaranted by the constitution of Nigeria and other international charters of which Nigeria is a member adding that journalists are not interested parties in the political crisis currently rocking the state.
They urged political parties, groups and their supporters to engage in their activities and leave journalists in the state to practice the profession without further attacks.
“We also condemn a situation where police attack and also watch or stand by where journalists are being attacked by hoodlums” and called on police and other security agencies to ensure protection of journalists operating in the state in the discharge of their responsibilities.
It further called on the police and other security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property of all Nigerians in the state irrespective of their political affiliations.
The union warn that if the incessant attacks on journalists in the state continues the council shall take appropriate steps including withdrawal of services in the state.
