Communal Conflicts: Govt Sets Up Peace Committee
The land crisis between Adadama and Inyima communities in Cross River State is being resolved as a peace committee has been set-up to look at the immediate and remote causes, with a view of restoring peace in both communities.
Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba said this in Calabar in an interactive forum with newsmen at the NUJ Press Centre, Calabar, the Cross River State capital
He said that Nigeria was blessed with abundant landmark which if well utilised through agriculture, will generate income for the teaming unemployed youths in the country.
He, however, criticised the crisis, saying that many lives were lost and properties worth millions were destroyed, and urged all individuals to help the security agencies in restoring peace and creating avenue for dispute resolution.
The Senate Leader advised traditional rulers in the affected communities to always control the youths whenever there was crisis.
“Security is every one’s business; it should not be left in the hands of the security agencies alone, timely release of information to the agencies will go a long way in preventing such insurgencies,” he contended.
According to him, 80 percent of land in Cross River State was barren and wondered why people will resort to taking of lives during the planting season describing such wanton killing of fellow human beings as barbaric savage.
The Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, called on unemployed Nigerian youths to stop seeking non-existing white collar jobs and engage themselves in profitable ventures like agriculture.
According to him, a large percentage of unemployed Nigerians wish to work in the oil sector, adding that less attention had been given to the agricultural sector which would have provided income for them.
“If the youths of this country embark on commercial agriculture through the grant of soft loans from bank, it will help to reduce the search for white collar jobs among unemployed Nigerians. Before the discovery of oil in Nigeria, agriculture was the main revenue source for the country, and farmers were the richest people in the country because their agricultural produce were being exported to other countries,” he said.
