Prof Nduka Heads Rivers Education Assurance Board
Prof Otonti Nduka has been named the first chairman of the new Rivers State Education Quality Assurance Agency Board, alongside other major players in the education sector in the state.
Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs Ibim Semenitari announced the decision of council while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting yesterday in Government House, Port Harcourt.
She also disclosed plans by the State Government to set up the Garden City Private Equity Investment Corporation Law 2013, noting that the secretary to the State Government and Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of the state were both mandated to work on the bill for onward presentation to the Assembly for deliberations and approval.
Commenting further on the new Education Quality Assurance Agency Board, Mrs Semenitari stated that Prof Orubite Okorosoye is to be the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the board which also includes Chief Moses Adiela of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and one Moses Baranwi of the Rivers State Polytechnic.
She emphasised that the new board will strengthen the monitoring and evaluation of the education system saying, “don’t forget that His Excellency, the Governor has consistently said education goes beyond infrastructure, and so the point of this board is to be able to perform the role of a monitoring agency that will be inspecting schools and making sure that teachers not only stick to curriculum, but also are available at the schools and giving the children quality education,” she added.
Also, the council deliberated and approved the Education Summit to be held between 25th and 26th of March. The theme of the summit is, “Enhancing Sustainable Development in Education and will be chaired by Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka.
Commenting on the derelict condition of the state-owned museum in the secretariat complex, Mrs Semenitari submitted that is not the focus of government for now due to other priority sectors stressing, “the governor has said specifically that we would have to focus on certain things as an administration our key areas of focus have been stated. So for 2013 budget that is not the area of focus.”
