NEMA Faults Report On Bayelsa Landslide
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has said that the recent landslide along the river bank of Okoloba in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, did not cause much havoc.
The South-South Coordinator of the agency, Mr. Umesi Emenike, told newsmen in an interview in Yenagoa last thursday that only three houses were affected by the “minor landslide”.
Emenike, who ruled out setting up a camp for the affected families, said the agency was assisting the victims to rebuild their homes.
“If you have a community of over 200 houses and three houses were destroyed, you don’t expect the government to come and set up a camp.
“They have relatives around, they can put up with for the time being.”
He said that NEMA had commenced the distribution of materials for the renovation of the affected houses, adding that 600 bundles of roofing sheets had been provided for the affected persons.
“Just today, we have delivered 600 bundles of roofing sheets and we are also going to provide other materials, like woods and nails.
“We want to help the victims to repair their homes. We don’t really need to start relocating people.
“What is paramount is to repair the houses damaged so that the affected persons can continue their normal lives,” Emenike said.
