Court Orders Arrest Of Ahoada East LG Councillors …Adjourns Soboma George’s Case
A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt yesterday issued a bench warrant for the arrest of three councillors and the Clerk of Ahoada East Legislative Assembly in Rivers State for refusing to appear in court during the ruling on the matter between the impeached Vice Chairman of the council, Hon Britain Ewor and the council’s Legislative Assembly.
Justice George Omereji made the order in response to the motion for warrant of arrest sought by the claimant’s counsel, Barr Agent B. Ihua-Maduenyi, seeking for the arrest of the deviant councillors for their absent during the court session.
The affected councillors include Hon Golden Emeka (former Leader) representing ward 8, Macdonald Akujuru, ward 10, Abraham Odiwe, ward 12 as well as Mr Ikechukwu Odom, the clerk of the House.
The claimant’s counsel while moving a motion for the warrant of arrest, posited that the absence of the defence counsel and some of the councillors was a calculated attempt to truancate the trial as well as delay justice for his client.
According to him, the business for the day was for the court to rule on the two motions brought before it, which he said, proceedings had been concluded on.
The court had earlier fixed yesterday to rule on the twin application sought by the claimant’s counsel to set aside the purported impeachment of the Vice chairman of Ahoada East LGA, Hon Britain Ewoh, as well as the committal of the councillors and the clerk of the legislative arm to prison for disobeying the court order.
However, the judgement could not go on as scheduled due to the absence of the defence counsel and four of the councillors.
The trial judge, Justice George Omereji while ruling on the matter, ordered the police to arrest the deviant councilors and put them into custody so as to bring them to court on the next adjourned date, and adjourned the matter to February 21, 2013.
