Ministry Impounds Truck Loads Of Toxic Waste …Arrests 53 For Sanitation Offences
The Rivers State Ministry
of Environment
has impounded three trucks loaded with materials suspected to be hazardous
wastes bound for Onne.
Similarly, the ministry arrested 53 persons for violation of
this month’s environmental sanitation
excercise.
The three trucks with registration numbers OGFZA, Rv. 308
ZE, OGFZA 310, FZE and FG 47-FZE were impounded along the East/West road, while
conveying the materials from Warri to
Onne.
Briefing newsmen after the exercise the state Commissioner
for Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli said
that the ministry will conduct thorough investigation of the substances being conveyed by the
trucks before taking action.
Dr. Weli also said
that the ministry needs clarification on why the Onne oil and gas free zone
will flout the state sanitation laws.
According to him, the laws of the state must be obeyed,
irrespective of who is concerned.
Meanwhile, the commissioner has commended the people of the state for their
massive turnout during the excercise.
He said that the turnout was an indication that Rivers
people are beginning to be alive to their civic responsibilities.
“We want to thank everybody who have participated in the
sanitation exercise.
“We have choosen one day in a month to remind us, that this
is something that we need to be doing every day, whether it’s the place we live or the place we work” he said.
Also speaking, the state Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Oliver Wolugbom
said that the agency is delighted that Port Harcourt is regaining its garden
city status.
The NOA Director, who attributed it to the effort of the
Ministry of Environment also stressed the need for the people of the state to
imbibe the culture of cleanliness.
In his speech, the zonal Director of the National
Environmental Standard Regulation Agency (NESREA), Mr. Simon B. Joshua urged
the government to sustain its campaign for environmental cleanliness.
