A’Ibom Reaches Out To Abandoned Children
The Akwa Ibom Government, says it is currently providing care for 470 abandoned and stigmatised children in Government Special Children Centres across the state.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Bassey Eshiet, gave the figure on Monday while conducting the new Commissioner of the ministry, Mrs Helen Ukpabio, round the children homes.
According to Eshiet, there are four government children centres in Uyo, the state capital while the fifth one is in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
She said the centres had been managed successfully over the years through prompt release of financial and material resources to the ministry by the state government.
Eshiet, who lauded the kind gesture of Gov. Godswill Akpabio and his wife, Unoma, toward the children, said the various homes had not recorded any form of disaster since inception.
The permanent secretary said the children had performed well in academics over the years, adding, “serving these children has been very interesting and encouraging”.
Responding, the Commissioner, Ukpabio, thanked the state governor and his wife for providing shelter for abandoned and stigmatised children in the state.
Ukpabio noted that the gesture of the state government had provided security for children and shielded them from abuse, neglect, cruelty and exploitation.
She said the state was committed to promoting programmes that could enhance the intellectual and educational development of Akwa Ibom children.
The commissioner gave the assurance that the Child Rights Law enacted by the Akwa Ibom Government had provided for the survival, protection and development of every child in the state.
She promised that facilities in the various government children homes would be given facelift and charged the matrons to love the children with the fear of God.
Ukpabio also urged the staff members at the homes to render selfless services to the children and promised to treat staff welfare with promptness.
The Women Affairs Commissioner swapped offices with the Education Commissioner, Mrs Eunice Thomas, last week in a minor cabinet reshuffle.
