Rivers, Hub Of Maritime Industry – Director
The Director of Marine Engineering Department in Rivers State Ministry of Transport, Engr. Senibo Wilkinson George, says the maritime sector is endowed with enormous potentials and opportunities for sustainable investment.
Engr. George made this assertion in a paper during a public forum organised by the State Ministry of Transport held at the Presidential Hotel, Port Harcourt recently.
According to him, Rivers State, strategically located in the Niger Delta is blessed with over one-sixth of the country’s 3000km waterways, stressing that it is a maritime hub in the country.
According to him, maritime and oil and gas sub-sectors are inter-related and inter-woven, and that they provide a wide market for business.
He hinted that the present administration under the leadership of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has put in place investor friendly policies and an enabling peaceful environment for business in the state, urging prospective investors to take advantage of the opportunities.
The Director disclosed that the State Government had acquired five water taxis to boost Maritime transportation, adding that they are willing to partner with interested foreign and local investors to provide effective ferry services to the people of the state.
Engr. George highlighted various categories of investment which include provision of water transportation for inter and intra state ferry services, establishment of dockyards and shipyards for ship and boat construction, repairs and other marine fabrication works.
Others he said include wreck removal services, haulage of dry and wet cargo through barges, dredging and canalisation works, development of private Jetties, marine terminals and oil tank farms, offshore construction and fabrication services, marine logistics and pollution control services among others.
He further disclosed that the Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone would provide laudable incentives for business promotion and development, adding that with the Federal Government’s recent approval for the dredging of the Orashi River from Oguta Lake in Imo State to Degema in Rivers State, there would be increased maritime activities in the state.
