RVHA Denies Aiding Corruption
Rivers State House of Assembly has debunked insinuations by one of the opposition political parties, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) that the House was encouraging corruption in the state.
Leader of the state Assembly, Hon Chidi Lloyd stated this yesterday in his office in Port Harcourt while reacting to allegations by the state chapter of ACN that the House was institutionalising corruption.
Hon Lloyd condemned the ACN for making such a blanket statement knowing that there was no iota of truth in the allegation, adding that the lawmakers reputation and sense of integrity remains unquestioned.
He urged the ACN to bury its frustration and become a responsible opposition by mentioning name(s) of lawmakers who are corrupt and go ahead to provide evidence like the current case of Femi Otedola against the House of Representative member Farouk Lawan
“I challenge anybody who has any evidence of corruption against the House to come forward, I know that we have no reason to suspect our colleagues, Hon Lloyd declared.
The House leader said the Assembly received petition involving the Ahoada East Local Government chairman, which the Speaker directed the ethics and privileges committee for proper investigation.
According to him, the committee is awaiting the reconvening of the House to submit its findings for deliberation, pointing out that the Assembly under the leadership of Rt Hon Otelemaba Amachree had done a lot for the state.
The lawmaker explained that laws passed by the Assembly were not only the overall interest of Rivers people but also intended to ensure that the state remains peaceful for meaningful development.
On resumption for the second session of the seventh Assembly, Hon Lloyd said, the state would witness a more robust Assembly particularly as the Speaker has approved review of all the laws of the state.
He disclosed that the review has become necessary because some of the laws are no longer in tune with current realities and therefore makes it difficult for the executive to implement.
