Educationist Wants Culture In Schools Curricula
Worried over the declining cultural values in the country, an educationist and Principal of Our Lady of Fatima College Port Hrcourt, Rev(Sister) Loretta Maris Ibobo, has urged government to include culture in schools curricula.
The Catholic cleric who gave the charge at the maiden edition of the Lady of Fatima College Cultural Festival at the weekend in Port Harcourt lamented the erosion of African values due to western culture.
She said, “as we all know, and must acknowledge, we have all been de-Africanised in no small measure”
Rev Ibobo argued that the informal value system brought about by colonialism has gradually disintegrated traditional values and negatively affect the youths in society.
However, she submitted that the school and other educational mediums remain a veritable platform to reverse the trend through the teaching of norms, values and aspirations of the society to upcoming youths.
She explained that culture promotes unity and understanding amongst the populace, “it embodies the overall way, of people way of living such as food, music, literature, intellectual activities, marriage and songs,” Ibobo added.
The Catholic Sister used the occasion to commend Governor Chibuike Amaechi for promoting culture through his policies and programmes especially, “who despite his level of exposure and aggrandisement, he still retains his native names. This shows that he is a lover of his culture and traditions”.
Against this backdrop, she called on parents, organisations and government agencies to promote culture and societal values as this would be able to curb social vices and redirect the youths in the right path.
Rev. Sister Ibobo while enumerating the achievements of the school stated that so far the College has excelled both in academic and extra-curricula activities, since the school came tops in the JET Club Competition early this year and was first at the choral competition organised last year by the state government.
The festival witnessed various cultural displays by the students, dancing competition and other presentations made by the College.
