That Boko Haram Suspect’s Escape
Last Tuesday, Nigerians were jolted with the news of the escape of Kabiru Sokoto, the suspected key mastermind of the Christmas Day bombing in Madalla, Niger State. The bombing, which took place at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, near Suleja in Niger State, killed 43 people while 50 others sustained injuries.
Sokoto, a member of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram was arrested last Saturday, alongside a serving officer of the Nigerian Air Force at the Borno State Governor’s Lodge, Abuja. He was said to have travelled from Maiduguri, Borno State, to Abuja on his way to London but decided to stay overnight at the Borno State Governor’s Lodge where he was nabbed.
The suspect, who was in handcuffs, escaped on Monday from a team of five policemen who took him to his home in Abaji, near Abuja, for a search.
Reports said that after the search, the policemen decided to take the suspect to the traditional ruler of the town (the Ona of Abaji) in a Toyota Hilux Van when a group of irate youths allegedly waylaid the team and got the suspect released.
We do not only view this dramatic escape of such a high profile suspect as a national embarrassment but the incident has once again exposed the inefficiency of the Nigeria Police Force in discharging its constitutional responsibility to Nigerians, and indeed, the nation.
This shameful incident is also a confirmation to the alarm raised by President Goodluck Jonathan that Boko Haram had infiltrated the security services of the nation.
Last Tuesday, Defence Minister, Dr Mohammed Bello equally alleged that the dreaded sect was out to forcibly Islamise the whole of the Northern Nigeria.
The Borno State Government, while defending the payment of N100 million to the family members of Mohammed Yusuf, the slain leader of the militant Islamic sect, also confirmed that the activities of Boko Haram were already threatening the security of the nation.
According to the Borno State Commissioner for Information, Mr Inuwa Bwala, Kaduna, Kano, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Abuja and Suleja have all been infected by Boko Haram elements.
Indeed, The Tide finds it difficult to understand how such a high profile suspect whose group’s activities constitute serious threat to the peace and unity of the country should be handled with kid gloves by the police high command.
Needless to say, the explanation given on the circumstances in which the escape occurred is untrue. It is unimaginable that the suspect who was arrested in a military-style commando raid, could be escorted home by five policemen for a search.
Perhaps, the police need to be reminded that it is their duty to ensure such high profile suspect is properly handcuffed, with chains in legs, and provided adequate security before he is taken anywhere.
We believe there is more in the police story than meets the eye. The entire episode is an indicator that the suspect was released to cover up the mastermind of the Boko Haram menace, and that the subsequent suspension of the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Anti-Terrorism Department of the Force Headquarters, Mr Zakari Biu, could be diversionary.
While we call for more stern measures to be taken to unearth the circumstances behind the escape of Kabiru Sokoto, we urge the Inspector-General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, to tell Nigerians the whereabouts of the Air Force Officer arrested with the escapee suspect.
As much as we condemn the high display of irresponsibility by the police in this matter, we hope that the Presidency will not only end at issuing a 24-hour ultimatum asking for explanation to the escape but will be committed to fishing out every body involved in this saga, and bring such persons to book, no matter how highly placed.
Drastic measures must be taken to fish out both sponsors and agents of Boko Haram within the security apparatus and the government now to save this nation from imminent collapse.
