Ex-Lawmaker Urges Patience Over Fuel Hike
A former federal lawmaker, Mr Johnson Abolagba, has called on Nigerians to exercise patience over the recent increase in the price of petrol.
Abolagba told newsmen in Auchi, Edo, state that Nigerians would benefit from the removal of subsidy on petroleum products in the long run.
He said that the removal of subsidy was in order as only a few “cabals” were benefiting from it.
“Though the pains and suffering will be difficult for most of us to bear now, but I know that in the long run, we will be better off.
“Nigerians may not see anything good in President Goodluck Jonathan’s action now, later they will come to appreciate him.
“We should all see this as a pain we have to bear for now in order to have a secured future for our children.”
Abolagba called for passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) to open up the downstream sector.
He said that government should begin to think of ways of making Nigerians partakers of the petroleum sector instead of its current hold on it.
“If the downstream sector is opened up, it will attract a lot of investors and consequently lead to creation of the much-needed employment opportunities for the Nigerian youths.’’
In a separate interview with The Tide, a cleric and socio activist, Pastor George Okosun, said the hike showed lack of sensitivity as the already impoverished masses would suffer more.
He expressed the fears that if not carefully managed, the removal could provoke a confrontation between the government and the masses.
“President Jonathan should have looked for alternatives to the removal of fuel subsidy by revoking the licences of the crude oil cabals.’’
