A’Ibom Workers Begin Strike Over Minimum Wage Distortion
Civil Servants in Akwa Ibom have commenced indefinite strike to protest against alleged distortion in the implementation of the N18,000 national minimum wage in the state.
Even though the workers have been enjoying the N18, 000 minimum wage since April 2011, it was learnt that the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), ordered the indefinite strike, following the disparity it noticed between the pay package of workers in other states and those of Akwa Ibom.
The Chairman of NLC in the state, Mr Unyime Usoro, told newsmen that the meeting it had with representatives of the government was fruitless.
“There was no commitment on their part so we have to embark on the strike.
“After a meeting with government team headed by the Head of the Civil Service, Mrs Cecelia Udoessien, government could not come out with strong commitment on the implementation of the new minimum wage as demanded by workers,” Usoro said.
When our correspondent visited the state secretariat at 10.30 am, the offices were locked, while few workers were seen milling around the main entrance into the secretariat, discussing the effect of the strike.
The secretariat’s main gate was also manned by Armoured Personnel Carrier of the Nigeria Police, Akwa Ibom Command.
A civil servant, who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “I do not have any farm or business except this work but I am in support of the strike.
“I want labour leaders to ensure that all the demands are met before they call-off the strike this time around,” he said
On December 22, the state chapter of NLC directed the workers not to return to their offices after the New Year holiday until government pay the “relativity agreement” in the N18,000 minimum wage demanded by labour.
