Onne Ports To Create 25,000 Jobs – Dame Jonathan
First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has said that the upgrading of the Onne Ports, by the Federal and Rivers State governments would create an additional 25,000 jobs.
Dame Jonathan said this at the end of a three-day Investors’ Forum tagged “Change that Works” organised by a group of entrepreneurs in collaboration with Rivers State government in Port Harcourt.
She was confident that, “the forum will bring about rapid transformation in the oil and gas sector, sustain democracy in the state and attract investors as well’, adding that if the pace of development in the state was sustained, the state would witness a boom in its economy.
She congratulated Governor, Chibuike Amaechi for his visionary leadership in steering the economic fortunes of the state positively, and remarked that the forum was timely as the state was blessed with vast resources in agriculture, oil and gas.
Urging the participants to exploit the business potentials in the state, Dame Jonathan explained that the on-going infrastructural development would provide the necessary environment to drive investment.
She advised investors to take advantage of the independent power project and the peaceful atmosphere now pervading the state, emphasising that the dualisation of the East-West Road would also provide the leeway for investors to come into the region.
Dame Jonathan urged the forum to evolve measures to ensure that the plight of the rural poor was addressed, especially women, as she congratulated the organisers for the programme.
Expressing a similar view, the Minister of Finance, Dr Mrs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who represented President Goodluck Jonathan, said, “a year from now, we want to see two or three deals that have materialised from this forum.”
Earlier in his speech, Governor Amaechi stated that the forum was geared at creating a better future for Rivers State, as he assured that the administration would do everything within its powers to improve the lots of the state economically.
Thanking the participants for their laudable contributions, Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs Ibim Semenitari reminded them that the state was open for investment.
Also, one of the forum organisers, Mr George Etomi was of the view that the forum had surpassed its target,” noting that it was rare to have this galaxy of stars to brainstorm on how to move the economy forward.
