NCSU Wants Journalists To Emulate Amakiri
The chairman of Nigeria
Civil Service Union (NCSU) in Rivers State, Comrade O.T. Lilly-West, has urged journalists across the country to follow the footsteps of the late publisher of Beacon Newspaper, Port Harcourt, Mr. Minere Amakiri in the discharge of their duties, saying, the fallen pen Maestro practiced the noble journalism profession with honour and passion.
Lilly-West who made the call in an interview in Port Harcourt shortly after paying a condolence visit to the family of late Amakiri last Monday said if journalists practiced in accordance with the ethics of the profession, they would leave their footprints in the sands of time.
According to him, late Amakiri believed in what he was doing and left behind his signature and worthy legacies for others to share.
The NCSU boss said the late publisher was a role model to people like him while he was alive with his combative brand of journalism, particularly when he was a correspondent with the Observer Newspaper, describing him as a man of honour who was ready to die for what he believed in.
“It is a characteristic some of us have and that is why his death is a disaster to us. I like his brand of journalism. He was one of the journalists in Rivers State that said things the way they were. He was fearless, and I want journalists to learn from him. Practice with honour and follow his footsteps”, he pleaded.
While praying God to give his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss, he described the death as shocking and pathetic.
Lilly-West also used the forum to commend Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for accepting to pay the N18,000 minimum wage to workers in the state and the harmonised 70 per cent salary adjustments, noting that the gesture would go a long way to foster industrial peace and harmony in the state.
While urging the workers to remain patient, the labour leader said steps had been taken for the proper computation of the new wage, assuring that the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC) in the state and the Joint Negotiating Council would never disappoint the workers.
