Federation Cup Matches Disrupt NPL Season
The Nigeria Premier League (NPL) has said that the interruption of midweek matches by the ongoing round of 32 games of the Federation Cup might prolong the duration of the season.
The Acting Executive Secretary of the NPL, Tunji Babalola, told Tidesports source yesterday in Lagos that the interruption was because some Premier League sides were involved in the Federation Cup.
Babalola expressed the fear that players would not have enough time to rest before the commencement of the 2011/2012 season.
He said that because of the clashes in fixtures between Premier League matches and the Federation Cup, the live telecast of league matches on Super Sports was also affected.
“The schedule of the coverage of league matches on Super Sport is also affected and we just have to put up with it as best as we can.
“Now that we are caught up in the spate of interruptions of league matches by the ongoing Federation Cup round of 32, there is nothing we can do.
“ My plea to the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) is for them to subsequently guard against such clashes in the future,’’ he said.
In spite of the hiccup in the fixtures, Babalola commended the standard of play exhibited by teams in the league.
“Clubs have improved and the standard of play has also improved.
“My appeal to match officials is for them to be steadfast in their officiating and avoid colluding with clubs who want to gain unfair advantage over others,’’ he said.
