Ag Gov Reverses Dissolution Of Chiefs Council
The acting Governor of Delta State, Prince Sam Obi has cancelled the dissolution of the council of traditional rulers in Udu Local government announced recently by the chairman of the council, Dr Henry Sakpra.
Prince Obi, who announced the cancellation of the dissolution when he visited the Ovie of the Udu kingdom Awuhorhu 1st ordered that the status quo should remain.
He described the chairman’s action as an embarrassment and a fundamental administrative error.
Prince Obi said the state government needs peace in every local government area and urged council chairmen not to take action that could create tension and chaos in the state.
The acting Governor wondered how the chairman could solely take such a decision without recourse to the Ministry of Local Government.
He, therefore, invited the chairman of the local government and some of the royal fathers to Asaba for a meeting on the issue.
His words, “I order that the status quo should remain in the Council of Traditional Rulers in Udu local government area because the chairman’s action has procedural lapses”
Prince Obi said royal fathers should be revered and treated with dignity and urged council chairmen not to toy with the traditional institution.
He explained that the state government and Royal Fathers were partners in progress even as he said that they were central to the success of the peace and security as well as the infrastructural development programmes of the State government.
Emphasizing the need for local government chairmen to seek the cooperation of traditional rulers, the acting governor said the timing was wrong.
Prince Obi commended the Ovie for embracing development and commended him for the land donated to the state government.
In his remarks, the Ovie of Udu Kingdom, Awuhorhu 1st, said the dissolution shocked him, saying that the chairman did not confide in him over the dissolution.
He, however, expressed appreciation to the acting governor over his intervention and promised to continue to support and cooperate with the state government.
