Assembly Seat Tears Apart Epie/Atissa Clans
Tension is gradually building up in the contest for the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Constituency I seat, as the current representative, Alfred Egba, stages a come back to the House.
The Tide gathered that since the grouping of the two clans together, representation had always been alternated among the clans .
While associates and supporters of Egba claimed he has been endorsed by the Atissa Council of Chiefs and political stakeholders in Yenagoa, another group, Epie –Atissa Peace Advocates, has described the alleged endorsement of the lawmaker as untrue and baseless.
Egba, who hails from Atissa clan, is a close political associate of Governor Timipre Sylva.
Spokesman of the group, Richman Akalikoli, made this known to journalists on Monday, in Yenagoa, at a press briefing, stressing that the seat in the Assembly has been on rotational basis of one tenure between the Epie and Atissa clans, an arrangement which has been respected over the years.
Akalikoli expressed fears that Egba flouting the agreement, may cause a breach of peace in the area, just as he prevailed on Governor Timipre Sylva, security agencies in the state and the two clan heads, youth and women groups to convene an urgent security meeting to resolve the burning issue.
“This principle of rotational representation has existed and peacefully practised in our common political history since 1979.This historical political evidence shows the clear shift at the end of four year tenure. “This practice is also not ignorant of the constitutional right for any individual to contest beyond a single tenure, but as an expression of fairness and security. The practice has been mutually respected ,maintained and upheld,” he said.
