Bayelsa Govt Pledges Improvement In Education Sector … To Assist Science Teachers
Bayelsa State Government says it is determined to improve the lot of the education sub-sector in its 2010 fiscal year.
To this end, government had dedicated its allocation from the Education Trust Fund (ETF) to the provision of basic science infrastructures like laboratories and libraries with a view to arresting the dearth of science studies in the school system.
The state commissioner of Education, Chief (Mrs.) Josephine Ezonboder stated this in her office when she played host to the state chapter of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN).
She attributed the slow pace science education in the state to limited budgetary allocation, in which the state government is seriously addressing in view of the importance of science in development of other sectors of the state.
“Our priority this year is to provide laboratories, libraries and other teaching materials to accelerate learning process in our school system”, she stated.
According to her, in doing this, multinational firms wish to build schools in any community would be required to provide all necessary facilities including toilets to make such institution conducive for both teachers and students.
She contended that lack of necessary infrastructural facilities was robbing students the necessary and elementary knowledge about science, and commended the science teachers in the state for their patriotism and concern for the sector promising that the ministry will in due course come to their aide.
Earlier, the chairman of the body, Mr. Richard Okpodo had outlined the aims and objectives of association and called for the ministry’s assistance and inclusion in science policy formulations.
