Fire Razes Down UNIBEN Laison Office
The University of Benin suffered another setback over the weekend as property of the institution valued above N40 million were lost in a fire incident.
The Liaison office of the University located in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja which doubles as its guest house was razed down Friday afternoon.
Eye witness account has it that the inferno started few minutes past 1 o’clock and though the could not be ascertained, electrical fault is being suspected.
The source said Power Holden Company of Nigeria, (PHCN) seized the power supply in the area due to some fluctuation and that when eventually the power was restored, a loud sound was heared, after which the fire started.
Computers, furniture, documents, refrigerators and television were among the burnt items which total value was placed at over N40 million.
An officer of the institution in the Liaison office who pleaded anorinity said PHCN is to blame for the unfortunate inferno.
According to the officer, the office has of recent experienced regular poor power supply.
“Power supply had become a regular problem and even when you have the light, it is either very low current or frustrating fluctuation.”
He regretted that the incident would affect the administrative process in the school as vital information stored in the computers and documents got destroyed.
