The site of proposed Bayelsa State Airport named after President Musa Yar’Adua has been submerged by flood.
The area was flooded following torrential rainfall that ravaged the state in the past five days. Also affected were public, commercial and residential buildings within Onopa, Amarata, Yenuzuegme, and Biogbolo.
The airport site, which has already gulped about N1.4 billion inland preparation was covered by massive flood, and most travelers attributed the “sorry state” of the site to poor pilings.
It is believed that millions of naira have been destroyed by the flood with the affected victims pleading for assistance from the state government to recover their loss.
Some of the victims, who spoke to The Weekend Tide blamed the havoc on poor town planning, blocking of natural water ways and the uncooperative attitude of land developers.
Although, Yenagoa, like most reverine communities in the state is predominantly a marshy canals with several adjoining lands which ordinarily would have served as a natural drain but now used as refuse dump by residents.
Efforts by The Weekend Tide to speak with the Commissioner for Environment on the issue was not successful as he was said to have travelled out on official duties, and officials of the ministry are not forthcoming on immediate plans to solve the problem.
