Lufthansa Re-opens PH-Frankfurt Flight, August
German National Carrier, Lufthansa airlines may re-open her Port Harcourt – Frankfurt route in August, as the airline has concluded all arrangements to commence the operation.
The Regional Manager of the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Mr. Uche R. Nwanguma stated this when the Board of Directors of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) visited the Airport.
Mr. Nwanguma told the Board members that the official of the airline has undertaken inspections of the airport twice last month and may conclude final inspection this month for the readiness and commencement of Port Harcourt–Frankfurt flight next month.
The Regional manager said that the commencement of the operation is tentative but assured that Port Harcourt Airport would witness more international flights before the end of second quarter of the year.
According to him, some officials of the airlines have taken facility audit of the airports and safety noting that they were impressed and happy to resume operations to the oil-rich city of Port Harcourt urgently.
Mr. Nwanguma further said the airline is awaiting two outstanding inspections before final decision is taken on commencement of the flight operation.
According to him, the two important inspections have been successful, as the airline officials certified the facilities on ground.
“During the facility tour by the airline, the airline inspected, the terminal building, screening machines, conveyer belts, the equipment used by the ground handlers and the safety sessions which involve the fire cover and capacity of foam.”
He said that the airline officials were particularly impressed with the runway lights and the rehabilitation of the run-way even though the authorities of the airline have not made any public statement concerning the re-opening of her Port Harcourt route. But a staff of the airline who pleaded anonymity confirmed that the airline is planning to return to Port Harcourt. He, however, did not say when the airline will commence operation.
It would be recalled that the airline stopped operations at the airport in 2006 when the airport was shut down for rehabilitation.
Port Harcourt airport was re-opened in December 19, 2007 and since then, only one international flight ply the airport daily.
