Covid-19: Group Gives Palliatives To PH Waterfronts, Slum Dwellers
A group, the Port Harcourt City/One Love, has provided palliatives to residents of waterfronts and slums in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, as a way of cushioning the effects of the lockdown occasioned by the spread of the novel Coronavirus.
The Leader of the group, Kingsley Wenenda Wali, who disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, urged Nigerians to use love for humanity as a weapon to fight the pandemic.
Wali said: “Some days ago, we went to some parts of Port Harcourt. We went to the slums, the waterfronts, to reach out to the poor. We saw how broke a lot of our people are but at the end of the day, I think, it re-energised the need for us to really do more.
“So, we are saying that COVID-19 is a health emergency that we can fight with love. This city has to respond with love by reaching out to the poorest of the poor as much as we can through food aid and education. We want to put in our widow’s mite, believing that even if we cannot reach out to everybody, we would have made a bit of an impact.
“This, we are doing to support the government and the organised private sector, knowing that it is not everything that these organisations can do. Everybody needs support. Essentially, we care about the COVID-19 crisis; we are concerned. We think that more like-hands on deck type of thing will work the magic.”
He stated that the group believes that it can support the effort of government and the organised private sector to fight the disease with all the resources at its disposal.
Wali said: “We recognise that Coronavirus is no respecter of status, class or gender. So, we want to join forces with government and the organised private sector to fight the disease with all the resources at our disposal without any attachment to religion, party, tribe or tongue. Our emphasis is strictly the love of humanity.
“So, at the end of the day, we are looking at it as an international crisis, and we are saying, ‘what can we do as a people using love as a weapon of fighting the disease, irrespective of whatever the government is doing’. At this moment, what we think as a group is that we need to trust the health advisers, we need to trust government.
“This is not the time for syncs to rule out lives. It is a time for us to believe that everybody who is put in authority loves our community and is doing his utmost best to see that we send back this Coronavirus to wherever it came out from, we send it back right there”, he added.
