Ex-MOSOP President Advises Ogonis On Politicians, Oil Firms
The People of Ogoni in Rivers State have been urged not to be deceived by any politician or oil company in their quest for a better deal and justice for the area for the decades of environmental degradation by activities of oil firms there.
Immediate past President, Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Legborsi Pyagbara stated this during the 28th Ogoni Day Celebration in Bori, Khana Local Government Area of the State, with the theme, ‘The Ogoni Renaissance: The Challenges and Prospects of Economic and Social Relativism’.
Pyagbara who used the occasion to announce his exit as MOSOP President charged Ogoni people to learn from experience and participate actively in the forth-coming population census, saying the exercise is important for Ogoni struggle for political representation and justice.
My appeal to all of us on this occasion is that the lessons from struggles for freedom globally, is that as you show signs of victory in your cause, this is when opponents and bad authorities will intensify their efforts to divide people of common fundamental belief against one another.
“So today, if we truly believe in the Ogoni Bill of Rights, let us not allow ourselves to be used by any government, any oil company and indeed any politician against ourselves. Let us forgive one another wherever we may have been wronged and move together as a people with common destiny.
“Nobody can love us more than ourselves. The second issue relates to the upcoming National Population Census. We urge our people to take part actively in the Enumeration and Demarcation Process and the Census by the National Population Commission when it holds.
“This is very important for our future struggle for political representation and justice particularly as unit and ward delineation is based on population markers. I want to reiterate that let us resolve from this Ogoni Day to unite in ways that we have never before,” he said.
