RSG To Develop PH Waterfronts
The Rivers State Government has disclosed plans to include Port Harcourt waterfronts and slums in its urban renewal programme through the provision of infrastructural facilities.
The Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Sir Chidi Adiele, said this in an interview with newsmen during the 2019 World Habitat Day celebration in Port Harcourt.
Sir Adiele said, the present administration meant well for waterfront dwellers in the state.
Meanwhile the Permanent Secretary says, this year’s celebration is a wakeup call on governments and all relevant institutions to accord requisite priority in their development and developmental assistance programmes to human settlement activities with a view to promoting their economic and social wellbeing.
The permanent secretary who said this in his address at the ceremony also said the celebration has thrown open the platform to rekindle in the minds of people across the globe of the need for developmental issues as they relate to human habitat and dwelling places as well as the use of innovation in technology as tools of achieving positive results.
Sir Adiele said the event has availed the ministry the opportunity to harp on salient development and contemporary issues as they relates to planning and development of habitable human space in the state.
“It also opens the flood gate for the ministry to bring to the mind’s and to the knowledge of the public, the inputs of the ministry that reflect the programmes, polices and actions of the state government”, he said.
Also speaking, chairman of the occasion, Architect Nnamdi O Obuzor said the theme of the celebration which is “Frontier Technology As An Innovative Tool to Transform Waste to Wealth” is a wakeup call to the poor state of our habitat as well as a challenge to clean up our physical environment or locality”.
He stressed the need for the adoption of appropriate technologies with a view to transforming waster to wealth in the state.
On his part, chairman of the planning committee for the celebration, Town planner Dr Mina Aprioku said the celebration was intended to showcase efforts of government and the agencies supporting the settlement programme and to highlight safe environment programme all over the world hour celebration today is in pursuit of better living environment” he said.
