2019: NUJ Urges Journalists To Report Only The Truth
The Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) has implored journalists to maintain standards and report only true stories ahead of the general election this year.
The President of the NUJ, Comrade Chris Isiguzo made the plea, warning practicing journalists against reporting unverified news.
Speaking to reporters at his Umuahia residence last weekend, Isiguzo, when asked to comment on the negative impact of fake news, said the union would not fold its hands and watch the effects of fake news or stories destroy the polity.
“The present leadership of our union is working closely with the Federal Government, especially, on their stand on fake news as we are very much aware of the effect of fake news on our polity; that is why we are working very closely with the Federal Government
“We are not very comfortable on how it has been eating deep into the system, so a lot of people are already quarrelling with real meaning of it; when we are talking about fake news we are talking about stories that do not convey any truth; they are based on falsehood
“I want to make it very clear that as union leadership, we will not take it kindly with those who engage in circulation of fake news or stories. I want to appeal to journalists that they should not allow themselves to be used as an instrument for the dissemination of fake news,” he said.
