Lawmaker Seeks Beach Market Dev
A legislator in Akwa
Ibom State, Mr Aniekan Bassey, has called for the speedy development of the Issiet Beach Market in Uruan Local Government Area of the state.
He said in an interview with newsmen in Uyo that the development of the market would boost seafood business in the state.
Bassey, who represents Uruan State Constituency in Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, said the beach market was the biggest fish market in the state.
According to him, if well developed, the Issiet Beach Market can supply seafood to the entire state and beyond, adding that the sea is noted for its tasty species of crayfish and fishes.
“The beach market has suffered for a long time; it needs access road, good drainage, toilet facilities, market stalls, security post and fire-fighting equipment,” he said.
“These are projects that will contribute to the economic growth of the state,” he said.
The lawmaker added that the market also required constant electricity supply and facilities for the preservation of the perishable commodities.
He said that Governor Udom Emmanuel’s initiative to boost business activities in the state, should start with the development of fish business, for which the people were well known.
Bassey said that he had consulted a firm of structural engineers to come up with a design for the development of the market for onward presentation to the state government.
“This is my little contribution as the lawmaker representing the people of the area,” he said.
