Obuama Relives Virtues Of Founding Fathers
One of the descendants
of the founding father of Obuama (Harry’s Town) in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, Sir Daobu Harry has called on the offspring of Idoniboye Obu, especially his first son, Chief Odibo Tom-Big Harry to imbibe and exhibit the welfarist virtues of their patriarchs.
In an interview at the weekend in Obuama, Sir Harry speaking on the 100 years of the death of the first son of the founder of Obuama, said that his life had thought the descendants to always show love and care for one another.
Also, they have learnt to adopt the all inclusive and caring attitude of Chief Odibo.
He said that the centemary celebration of his death would go a long way to rekindle his spirit and bring his virtues closer to the new generation.
Chief Odibo Tom-Big Harry, the patriarch of Ombo Group of Houses and the first son of the founder of Obuama, Idoniboye Obu, father of 37 children became the head of Onibo Group in 1863 and died on December 5, 1914.
Also speaking in Obuama at the weekend, the current Head of Odibo Group of Houses His Royal Highness, Alabo Ombo Clinton Odibo Tom-Big Harry, Odibo VI and Adaye Ombo VIII of Kalabari Kingdom said they would be marking the 100 years memorial celebration of late Odibo, their great grand father.
According to him, the memorial would be to celebrate and highlight the goodness of their great patriarch and bring him closer to the people, especially the younger generation.
Late Odibo, he said, was the Head of the Ombo Group when the movement of the Kalabaris from Elem-Kalabari in 1881 was committed to the well-being of his siblings and father’s family.
Programmes for the centenary memorial began last Friday, December 5, 2014 with the announcement of his death on the same date 100 years ago and press briefing.
Four other dates, 24th, 26th, 27th and 28th of this month have been slated for other events as part of the memorial activities.
On the 24th, youths of Obuama would take over the town in celebration accompanied with canon shots, rekindling the spirit of the forefathers.
The community, both indigenes and visitors would enjoy free medical exercise, where people will be examined and treated free of charge on the 26th, while a candle procession and service of songs will hold later in the day.
On the 27th, a community party in which all and sundry will be entertained will be preceded by a biographical book launch on chief Odibo Tom-Big Harry and a visit to his tomb site.
The celebration will be rounded off with a thanksgiving service on Sunday 28th December at St Albaris Anglican Church, Obuama, a church that was founded in the days of Odibo Tom-Big Harry.
