Leader of South-South Caucus members in the House of Representatives, Chief Andrew Uchendu has hinted that the lower chamber will revisit the emergency rule extension as requested by the presidency whenever they reconvene.
Speaking in a phone-in programme in Port Harcourt at the weekend, Chief Uchendu explained that the House did not reject the request from the presidency, but rather that the tensed atmosphere on Thursday did not allow the matter to be discussed.
He berated the police for barring members from entering the premises of the National Assembly to carry out their legislative duties even when they identified themselves.
Uchendu who represents Emohua/Ikwerre Federal Constituency in the House faulted police claim of intelligence report as reason to bar members from entering the chambers, “I find it difficult to believe, to me that’s far from the truth.”
Explaining why members forcibly entered the chambers despite police action he observed, ” If you were in the shoes of the lawmakers who were with the Speaker what would you have done?”
On the reason why he led 37 members of the House to defect to the All Progressives Congress(APC), Chief Uchendu stated that at the time they left there was crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), quoting section 68(1) of the constitution which gave them right to do so.
He further explained that the same section covers Speaker of the House, whom he said has the right to defect, saying the speaker was not elected by basis of majority party but by all members to lead them.
Asked why the House opposed most of President Jonathan’s proposal, he replied, “We do not have anything against the president, but once the executive is overreaching itself then we will call them to order…So each time we are raising an issue it’s to put the government in order.”
Last week, Chief Uchendu picked nomination form to contest the Rivers East Senatorial seat in next year’s elections under the APC. He told journalists that he is poised to serve his people on a higher platform.
Considering his performance in the past 12 years as a representative, Uchendu believed his presence in the senate will help consolidate his achievements and transform his constituents.
