ECOWAS Charges Imoke On Poverty Elevation
President of the Eco
nomic Community of West Africa Commission, Mr. Kadre Ouedraogo, has urged the Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke to sustain the fight against extreme poverty.
Ouedraogo said this last Tuesday during the opening session of the Eight Edition of the Joint Retreat of ECOWAS Institutions, Permanent Representatives and National Units, holding at the Tinapa Resort Calabar, and described as pragmatic the efforts of Governor Imoke in making healthcare delivery a priority in the state.
According to Ouedraogo, the outstanding approach adopted by the governor in tackling some health challenges in the state as well as other developmental strides recorded has made Calabar a force to reckon with in the sub region.
He said, “ Your commitment to the fight against extreme poverty and especially your personal involvement in malaria eradication are well known to me. “I welcome your initiatives in that regard and avail myself of this opportunity to urge you to sustain these efforts which, undoubtedly, will contribute to the attainment of ECOWAS Vision 2020.”
Ouedraogo promised to pull the weight of ECOWAS to support the state in its developmental programmes especially those that are in line with its vision in reducing poverty and wellbeing of the citizenry.
On the retreat, Ouedraogo said the exercise would afford members a common platform for not only to understand the new challenges and response strategies in the region, but also to agree on how best to strengthen the coordination, communication and collaboration with stakeholders in the integration process.
While acknowledging the contributions and efforts of Heads of Member States for monitoring the monetary integration process, the ECOWAS boss said, “I am sincerely beholden to all their peers who have left no stone unturned in consolidating peace and security in West Africa. “As a result of their strong conviction and wise decision, our region is experiencing gradual stabilisation of the political and security situation.”
