The Rivers State House of Assembly is to investigate why some workers of the Rivers State Hospitals Management Board (RSHMB) who were employed in 2009 were not given appointment letters.
The Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Dan Amachree, stated this during Monday’s plenary following the House’s receipt of a petition from some staff of the Rivers State Hospitals Management Board over the refusal of the Rivers State Civil Service Commission to issue them with appointment letters since 2009 when they were employed.
While reading the petition on the Floor of the House, the Chairman, House Committee on Hospital, Hon. Irene Inimgba representing Port Harcourt Constituency 11, said the staff were employed in November, 2009 and have not been issued letters of employment
The petition, signed by Soka Margret, Adoka Grace and Emmanuel Etow-Awaji, indicated that they had written several times to the Rivers State Civil Service Commission to regularise their employment by issuing them appointment letters but all to no avail.
The workers, who claimed to have been working in several hospitals across the state, pleaded that the House should intervene and order the authorities concerned to make their appointment legal.
According to them, without letters of appointment, their stay as workers under the Hospitals Management Board were illegal even though they get their salaries.
However, Speaker, Rt. Hon Otelemaba Dan Amachree ordered that the House Committee on Health should handle the issue and report back to the House.
