K-Dere, B-Dere Clash Claims Two Lives
Two persons were allegedly killed last Tuesday following a renewed communal clash between B-Dere and K-Dere communities in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The Tide learnt that problem started in the area when some indigenes of B-Dere accused their neighbours K-Dere of whisking one of the community leaders and reportedly killing him.
But barely 24hours after the allegation by B-Dere, their neighbours (K-Dere community) accused B-Dere of kidnapping and killing their kinsman culminating into crisis.
The two neighbouring communities have been enemies for ages
The last communal crisis involving the two communities was in 2011 when one person was killed and several houses burnt and destroyed
The crisis last Tuesday recorded casualties on both sides, even as armed security operatives were drafted to quell the situation.
Confirming the incident, Chairman of Gokana Local Government Area, Mr. Demua Ledee Demua, explained that there were indications that the two communities may have lost one member each to the clash.
Demua stated that a bag belonging to one of the victims was found by the police, adding that the security outfit was still investigating the matter.
When The Tide visited the area on Wednesday, the two communities were deserted as anti-riot police operatives took over the area.
It was also learnt that properties were also destroyed in the two communities.
According to the chairman, “there are signs that two persons had been killed, but nobody has brought out their bodies.
The two communities have been involved in communal clashes for some time now,” the Gokana council boss said.
Spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, who confirmed the incident to The Tide on telephone said the situation had been brought under control, but said there was no evidence to prove that two people died.
He said, “The claims that two persons died during the clash between the two communities are mere conjectures, because there is no evidence to that effect. But as I speak with you the Police have brought the situation under control.”
