New Rivers Sewage Plant To Boost Fertilizer Production
The new sewage treatment plant built by the Rivers State Government will help in boosting fertilizer and methane gas production, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sewage Matters, Dr. Ogu Emejum has revealed.
Dr. Emejum made the revelation at the weekend when he took newsmen led by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr David Iyofor round the facility, at Eagle Island, an outskirt of Port Harcourt.
He explained that the plant, when commissioned, will turn waste into fertilizer and methane gas for agriculture and domestic uses.
Dr Emejum stated,” About four years ago, the governor had a vision to have a sewage plant because of the issues of dumping sewage in the creeks and in gathers. You know when sewage is dumped indiscriminately, the issue of malaria and typhoid increases.”
He explained that the plant will process about 1,000 lubic metre of sewage per day or 20 truckloads of sewage daily, disclosing that talks have already begun with sewage contractor in the state in bringing their trucks to the facility for treatment.
The Governor’s aide while praising the vision of Rt. Hon Amaechi in building the plant, declared that,” the equity health benefit of that far outweighs the monetary value you get. So, that alone is a benefit to the community, to clean the environment in a benefit to the community.”
Also speaking, Mr Iyofor said the pilot scheme in constructing the sewage treatment and processing plant in another sign that the governor gives priority to almost everything in his administration.
