RSG Sets Up Salary Structure Verification Committee
Worried by the flagrant misinterpretation of the different salary structures in the state public service, the Rivers State Government has set up a 21-member Salary Structure Verification Committee to ascertain the specific cadres of officers entitled to such salaries.
Inaugurating the committee last Tuesday in his office in Port Harcourt, the Head of Service, Barr. Samuel LongJohn, who charged members to take the assignment seriously, said the situation was very critical and as a fleece on government.
He said circulars have already been sent out to all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to clarify the position of government, stressing that no staff would be denied any of their due entitlement.
According to the head of service, the terms of reference include, among others, to determine the validity of the various salary structures used for payroll operations, whether they are correctly applied to the various cadres they relate to, as well as the accuracy of the nominal rolls being prepared by the MDAs.
The committee is also to study the current salary preparation procedures and make recommendations that would enable the accounting officers in the MDAs have knowledge of those being pay-rolled and comment on any issues that would enhance the efficacy of the payroll preparation process.
Responding, the chairman of the committee, Mr George Nwaeke, who is also the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, thanked the Head of Service for the opportunity given them to serve, and promised to do a thorough job and deliver on time.
Members of the committee comprise Permanent Secretaries in the Office of the head of service, Establishment Bureau, ministries of Women Affairs, Commence and Industry, directors of the Ministry of Finance, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, State Audit Department as well as chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, Joint Public Service Negotiating Council and the Medical and Health Workers Union, while the director, Planning, Research and Statistics in the Office of the Head of Service, Mr Donatus Nweneka, is to serve as secretary.
The committee has 6 weeks to submit its report.
