FG, RSG Partner On Free Healthcare
In a bid to achieving the Millennium Development Goals 4,5 and 6, the Presidency, the Rivers State Government and Local Government Councils have carried out medical outreach programmes in Rivers State.
The programmes which ended last Monday was anchored by the Primary Health Care Management Board. The exercise was aimed at reducing mortality, improve maternal health and combat HIV/AIDS, Malawa and other disease have been successfully carried out in three malaria Local Government Area of Rivers State
The three local governemnt area where these programmes were carried out include Akuku Toru, Klang and Omuma all in Rivers State.
Speaking in one of the centres in Kaa-bangh in Khana, the Commissioner for Health, Rivers State, Dr Sampson T. Parker, disclosed that pregnant women and children would be immunised, children dewormed and health education would be offered while treatment of common ailments would be given to partients for free.
Dr Parker, who was represented by the executive Secretary, Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (PHCMB) , Dr Claribel said that the government was interested in the reduction of children and maternal mortality as well as other preventable diseases.
According to him, “one of the indices to know whether a society is developing is by the health condition of its people. This explains why the world is eager to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on health.
The Health boss assured that the execise would be carried out in the 23 Local Government Areas of the state.
The paramount ruler of Kaa-bangha Community, Chief Saro Menekpugi, who commended the initiative by the government and assured the support and co-operations of his people during the exercise.
Chief Menekpugi appealed to the governments to carry out more of such programmes in the rural communities.
In his response, a community leader who spoke on behalf of the communities, Sunday Lar Boniface, appreciated governments efforts and said the programme was brought to those who valued it, stressing that the gain could not be over emphasised.
