National Security: FG Plans Defence Policy Review
The Minister of State for Defence, Mrs Olusola Obada, said
in Jos yesterday that the nation’s defence policy would be reviewed to tackle
current security challenges facing the country.
“When the current policy was formulated, there were no
terrorist threats. There was no oil bunkering, no piracy and other issues that
have come into play.
“Therefore, we need to review our national defence policy to
take into consideration such contemporary challenges,” the minister said, in a
paper entitled: “An assessment of Nigeria’s National Defence Policy: Toward a
Sustainable Development in Nigeria” which she delivered at the National
Institute for Policy and Strategy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near
Jos.
She promised that all stakeholders would be involved in the
formulation of the policy.
“There is going to be a workshop that Mr President himself,
all security agencies, academia and scholars from great institutions like NIPSS
and National Defence College, all eggheads and military service chiefs will be
part of, to develop a new policy,’’she said.
The minister stated that the Federal Government was aware of
its responsibility to protect lives and property and would do everything
necessary to achieve the goal.
“There is no nation that will develop without peace and
security. We need a secure environment to forge ahead,” she noted.
Obada stated that the Nigerian armed forces were one of the
best in the world and must be supported with right policies for optimal
performance.
“I can say that the achievements of the Nigerian armed
forces in the realm of foreign policy and national development can be attested
to by its role in stabilising the domestic environment, promoting regional
cooperation and integration.
“The stage is set to bequeath a sufficiently robust military
capable of meeting domestic and external interests of Nigeria as an instrument
of national development in the 21st century and beyond.
“The future holds bright prospects of surmounting the
envisaged challenges and constraints,” she stated.
In his remarks, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Mohammed
Umar, said that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) had established an international
helicopter flying school in Enugu to produce pilots not only for NAF but for
the international community, especially the African region.
“We are also into the fabrication of aircraft spare parts.
We have opened a hangar in Lagos and our facilities are open to private
companies some of which have keyed into the services by using our hangar to
service various helicopters,’’ he added.
