CP Explains Botched Attack On Station
Armed robbers who invaded the police station in Igarra,
Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo, last Friday night failed in their mission,
the police said on Saturday.
Eye-witness account had it that the robbers had entered the
police station in three cars few minutes before midnight.
They later attempted to rob a new generation bank in the
area by throwing dynamite into the premises to disperse the securitymen on
duty.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Olayinka Balogun,
however said the robbers could not enter the police station’s armoury.
“Yes, they invaded the police station but they met
resistance. Their plan was to attack the two banks situated opposite each
other, but they were also resisted there. “We however recovered from them at
the scene of the incident three AK 47 rifles, a locally-made explosive and two
vehicles, namely a Toyota Sienna and Camry. We suspect that two of them are
hiding in the cave. We have their blood-stained clothes. They are holed up in
one cave, but we have been firing teargas into the cave to smoke them out,” he
said
According to eye-witness reports the robbers had met strong
resistance from the securitymen attached to the bank as well as members of a
vigilant group in the area.
As a result of the resulting gun battle, the robbers could
not gain access into the bank and in the process one of them was shot.
They later went to Momodu Ajayi Road, about one kilometre
from the police station, and shot sporadically to scare people. Many of the
robbers later escaped in a truck.
It was however believed that the wounded robber and another
gang member escaped into the caves in the Igarra hills.
