Community Demands N33bn From NLNG
Some landowners of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas right of way in Rundele Community in Emohua Local Government Area, Rivers State are accusing the company of double dealing which had resulted in their being swindled to the tune of N33.8 million over a period of 13 years.
The landowners had discovered of recent, that contrary to the spirit of understanding of the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMOU) between them and the country some staff of the company had short-changed some of community/company relationship.
Having discovered this anomaly, the affected landowners had consulted a lawyer who have since written to NLNG. They pointed out those anomalies and demanded that the company should make good, the amount involved in the dubious transactions between its officials and their selected contractors.
In a letter dated 2nd December 2011, the lawyer represented the landowners, Chief (Barrister) B. U. Ekwugha gave the company up till 31st December to take immediate steps to correct the anomaly and injustice meted out to his clients by paying them the 33.8 million or they would take all necessary steps to recover tier money.
The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) was also accused of dereliction of its responsibility by not providing town hall, boreholes, markets, road to the community, according to the spirit of the Memorandum of Understanding.
Efforts made to reach the Community Relations Manager of the company proved abortive as a voice from his office told this reporter that there is currently an internal inquiry going on to ascertain who and who are involved in the shady dealing in the case of Rundele community.
The voice further confirmed to our reporter that the Rundele case, is a peculiar one, since the company has its modalities of dealing with such issues in ttheir host communities where they have been operating over the years.
“We shall get at the root of the matter” the voice reassured the reporter.
