NSF: Nigeria’s Eto’ Wins Golf Gold
An Akwa Ibom golfer, Samuel Eto, has won gold in the golf event of the on-going National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt.
Eto who shares the same name with Cameroon soccer international, Samuel Eto, won the gold in the doubles match play category one event with compatriot Samuel Achale.
Eto who hails from Esiene Udom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, told reporters that the name which means ‘God’s Sword’ was given to him by his parents.
“The name has brought a lot of pressure on me to be as successful as the world renowned star.
“This victory at the sports festival would motivate me in winning future laurels in the sport, to attain global recognition,” he said.
Eto who noted that he hopes to meet the Cameroonian player soon, noted that he had won several laurels in the sport.
“I won in one of the categories of the ‘Nigeria @50 Golf tournament played at the IBB Golf and Country club Abuja, in 2010,” he said.
Edet Umoh, Head Coach of the Akwa Ibom team, noted that he hoped to win at least five gold medals at the festival.
The South-African based golfer who was the Nigeria’s No.1 ranked professional golfer in 2008/09, rated the standard of play at the festival low.
“This sports festival is the least in standard of all the festivals I have attended and the golf authorities should address the situation,’ he said.
Winners have emerged in various categories of the event which include: singles categories 1 and 2, doubles categories 1 and 2, ladies gold division, combined net scores individual categories among others.
Bayelsa leads the pack with two gold medals while states such as Lagos, Plateau, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers have won one gold medal.
The official presentation of medals to winners in the decided categories was conducted last Saturday evening.
