FG To Establish Army Barrack In Opobo
The Federal Government will soon establish an army barrack at Opobo in Rivers State.
Already, a naval base has been set up at Ikot-Abasi in Akwa Ibom State, a border town to Opobo, in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of the state.
Newly promoted Maj-General Kenneth Minima who gave this hint at Opobo on Sunday said the move was aimed at policing effectively the West Coast of the Niger Delta as well as beef up security in that axis of the country.
The Opobo-born Maj-General, said at a reception organised in his honour by his kinsmen at the ancient town of Opobo, that the military was committed to checking lapses along waterways to curb militancy and all forms of restiveness.
He thanked the Opobo Monarch, King Dandeson Jaja and the Opobo people for the honour done him, and promised to live up to expectations in his national assignment.
Earlier, King Dandeson Jaja commended Maj.-General Minima, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division of Nigeria Army, for making Opobo Kingdom proud and wished him the best in his military career.
But the Opobo monarch lamented the several years of neglect of the area, and urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts at addressing developmental challenges of the people to give them a sense of belonging in the Nigeria project.
