Resident Doctors To Earn Bursary, Soon
Resident doctors of Rivers State origin will soon be paid their bursary allowances, the chairman of the Rivers State Scholarship Board, Dr. Elechi Amadi has said.
Dr. Elechi Amadi, who gave the indication when executives of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State branch paid him a courtesy visit in his office recently stated that the Board paid bursary to resident doctors last year and was making arrangements to pay more this year.
He explained that the dearth of finance hampered the bursary payments to resident doctors and students in general in 2009.
The chairman pointed out that government was concerned in the training of medical doctors particularly in specialized areas, and urged NMA to outline specific areas in which doctors needed training and forward to the state Scholarship Board for necessary attention.
Earlier, the chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers State branch, Dr. Bonas B. Harry, had said that there was need to sponsor doctors in clinical and specialized training to improve health delivery in the state.
The NMA chairman pointed out that with the rapid advancement of medicine worldwide it is imperative for the state government to assist doctors in acquiring modern medical techniques and skills abroad and enriching medical practice in the state, explaining that it would be difficult for individuals to meet up the cost of acquiring this training.
He expressed the belief that if government trains more doctors in specialized medical fields abroad, it would in the long run save people and even government the huge amount spent on overseas medical treatment as well as curtail brain-drain in the country at large.
He pleaded wit the rivers State Scholarship Board to regularize the payment of N150,000.00 bursary due to resident doctors every year which has not been regular for the past two years.
Dr. Harry however, thanked the Scholarship Board and government for their efforts in grating scholarship and paying bursary to students in general.
