Minister To Grace 2023 Nigeria National Chess Championships
The organisers of the 2023 Nigeria National Chess Championships have said the games to be held in Lekki, Lagos, would have the Minister of Sports Development, John Owan-Enoh as special guest.
Tournament Director, Rex Ogunnaike, said this in a recent statement in Lagos.
He disclosed that in the last three years, the quality and influence of the Nigeria National Chess Championship had improved and grown significantly, leading to faster development of the sport in Nigeria.
“The championship has produced young talents and provided hints on the future possibilities of chess in Nigeria.
“The 2023 edition of the Nigeria National Chess Championship is scheduled for October 2 to 9, and will feature an Elite Invitational Section with 24 of the best chess players in Nigeria.
“They will compete for the Nigeria National Chess Champion and Nigeria National Women’s Chess Champion titles,” he said.
Ogunaike further revealed that the winners of titles would represent Nigeria at the 2024 Africa Individual Chess Championship (AICC).
“The 24 players in this section have gone through rigorous selection and qualification process, which includes a Nigeria National Chess Championship qualifiers tournament, to be able to compete in the final stage.
“Nigeria National Chess Championship 2023 will also have an Open Section which will accommodate players at every category including beginners and masters.
“Any member of the public can register to participate in the Open Section where they can test their mettle against other players of their strength.
“The Open Section will also have a vibrant Junior Category that will cater for U-20, U-14 and U-10 players,” he said.
The Director added that hundreds of school children were expected to participate in this category.
“Highlight of this year’s opening ceremony will be a session to induct seven distinguished Nigerian chess personalities and two organisations into the newly inaugurated Nigeria Chess Hall of Fame.
“This new development in Nigerian chess is set to celebrate and honour important contributors to the development of the sport in Nigeria,” Ogunaike added.

PH To Host 2026 NWFL Super Six
In a statement released by the league, the competition is scheduled to take place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, with six clubs set to battle for the league title at the end of the 2025/26 season.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt reflects the Rivers State Government’s continued support for women’s football and its successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
The Super Six tournament will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.
Qualified teams for the competition include defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.
The NWFL Premiership has produced four different winners in the last five editions, with Rivers Angels winning in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claiming the title in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphing in 2023, and Edo Queens emerging champions in 2024.
The league also urged participating clubs to comply with all competition regulations and directives ahead of the championship. The Super Six will determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Teams are expected to arrive on Friday, June 5, when the draw ceremony and pre-match meeting will also take place. Matchdays are scheduled for June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, with rest days in between before the tournament concludes with the trophy presentation ceremony.
