MTN Leads Gsm Operators On Subscriber Basis
MTN Nigeria is leading other GSM operators in the country on subscriber basis, The Tide investigation revealed.
According to Operator Quarterly Data posted on the website of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), MTN had a total of 51,274,654 subscribers in the first quarter of 2013.
The figure showed additional 3,853,663 subscribers or a growth of 8.12 per cent over the 47,440,991 customers recorded in the last quarter of 2012.
Globacom followed with 23,833,796 subscribers, losing 290,920 subscribers from the 24,124,716 customers in the fourth quarter of 2012.
The reports stated that MTN Nigeria is leading Globacom with a whopping 27,460,858 subscribers.
Airtel Nigeria came third with a subscriber base of 23,670,986, an increase of 578,791 subscribers from the 23,092,195 service consumers in the last quarter of 2012.
Etisalat Nigeria is fourth with 15,114,484 service customers.
It added 201,683 subscribers to the 14,912,801 subscribers recorded in the last quarter of 2012, a growth of 1.35 per cent.
MTEL Ltd, the mobile arm of NITEL, continued to maintain its 258,520 customers.
On the other hand, Visafone Ltd led in the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) segment with 2,138,154 subscribers in the first quarter.
It lost 127,720 customers from its 2,265,874 subscribers recorded in 2012.
Starcomms lost 61,343 service consumers from the 307,844 recorded in the last quarter of 2012 as it had 246,501 subscribers in the first quarter of 2013.
Multilinks Telkom suffered a loss of 55,895 from its 2012 subscriber strength of 263,767, while retaining 207,872 customers in the first quarter of 2013.
ZoomMobile maintained a subscriber base of 111,077.
The NCC data showed that most of the fixed/fixed wireless networks (landlines) like ZoomMobile, Intercellular Nigeria Ltd., MTS 1st Communications, Disc Communications, WiTEL and O’Net were stagnant as per their subscriber base.
Others are Rainbownet Ltd., Monarch Communications, XS Broadband, Webcom and NITEL.
