NSC Explains Life Bans For Athletes At Eko 2012
Placing life bans on some athletes at the just-concluded 18th National Sports Festival (NSF) was all in a bid to sanitise the festival, a National Sports Commission (NSC) official has said.
“It was all done to ensure that participating states and athletes play by the rules in future Games,’’ Tony Ohaeri, NSC’s Director of Press, told newsmen in Abuja.
The NSC had wielded the big stick on some athletes and states whose actions ran foul of the rules and regulations during the festival held from November 27 to Dec. 9 in Lagos.
Ohaeri said a lot of sharp practices were going to be curbed with the way the NSC had come down hard on erring athletes, states and officials at the 18th NSF.
“The Commission had to take that step not because it wants to jeopardise the athletes’ respective career but to sanitise our sports for the sake of the future,’’ he said.
The NSC Director of Press said the commission had since communicated the punitive decisions to the concerned states and all other necessary organs.
“These decisions, which were arrived at by the Main Organising Committee (MOC) of the 18th NSF in Lagos, have been communicated to the Commissioners of Sports of the concerned states.
“Other relevant bodies that should know about these have also been informed for necessary action,’’ he said.
Athletes punished for various violations of the rules included Oladele Ojo, also known as Alaba Joseph, and Olubunmi Olamide, also known as Olubunmi Olayemi, both from Ekiti.
Other two teammates in the state hockey team, Olubunmi Emman and Ademisoye Olamide, were also banned from participating in the NSF for life.
They were also banned from participating in any event organised by the Hockey Federation of Nigeria (NHF) for two years for violating the eligibility rule of the sports festival.

PH To Host 2026 NWFL Super Six
In a statement released by the league, the competition is scheduled to take place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, with six clubs set to battle for the league title at the end of the 2025/26 season.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt reflects the Rivers State Government’s continued support for women’s football and its successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
The Super Six tournament will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.
Qualified teams for the competition include defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.
The NWFL Premiership has produced four different winners in the last five editions, with Rivers Angels winning in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claiming the title in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphing in 2023, and Edo Queens emerging champions in 2024.
The league also urged participating clubs to comply with all competition regulations and directives ahead of the championship. The Super Six will determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Teams are expected to arrive on Friday, June 5, when the draw ceremony and pre-match meeting will also take place. Matchdays are scheduled for June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, with rest days in between before the tournament concludes with the trophy presentation ceremony.
