FRSC Launches Ember Months Campaign
Sector Commander of the Rivers State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Dr Kayode Olagunju says the organization is determined to reduce road accidents by 50 per cent by the end of this year.
Olagunju made the remark in Port Harcourt at the launching of the “ember months” public enlightenment campaign.
He said the campaign was aimed at sensitizing the public and stakeholders on safety regulations, to prevent road crashes during the months.
“The commission is also suspending arresting of traffic offenders between September 10 and September 14, nationwide as it concentrates on public enlightenment”, he said, adding that the sector intended to ensure zero road crashes during the last quarter of the year and in the new year.
Olagunju advised drivers to avoid over-speeding, dangerous driving, using telephones while driving, overtaking wrongly and engaging in drunk-driving.
He said the nation would never achieve national development in an atmosphere of injuries, deaths and insecurity, caused by road traffic crashes, pointing out that during the campaign, the commission would carry out free vehicle checks to inform the owners about anomalies and faults identified in their vehicles.
Olagunju urged road users to always call telephone number 122, the commission’s emergency toll free number any time there was a crash, pointing out that the organization would respond to rescue victims within 20 minutes of such calls.
The state’s Commissioner for Transport, Mr. George Tolofari, represented by Mr. Ken Abia, Executive Director of the Rivers State Transport Company, said that “ember” months were not evil months and commended the commission for its safety campaigns while enjoining road users to be safety conscious during the ember months.
