Economic and social ac
tivities have resumed in Abua-Central in Abua/Odual local government area of Rivers State following intense interactions with various stakeholders on the security situation of the area.
Chairman, Caretaker Committee of Abua/Odual Local Government, Chief Oye Fubara Igenewari, disclosed this when the Abua/Odual Journalists Forum visited him in his office at the council secretariat in Abua Central, recently.
Chief Igenewari recalled the poor security situation he met upon assumption of office which included cultism, kidnapping, extortion of money from traders, raping of women among others, attributing the menace to poor communication and poor road network between security agencies and the people.
The council chairman said he has embarked on grading of some roads at Emoh, Iyak, Egbolom, Okoboh and Agada I and II communities in wards seven and eight while also promising to enhance transportation of farm produce in the area.
Chief Igenewari, who indicated his desire to re-organise the popular ABOLGA mass transit in the local government area observed that much is needed to be done in terms of socio-economic re-orientation of the people, promising to partner with the Abua/Odual Journalists forum in that regard.
Earlier, the forum had commended the council chairman for appointing one of their members as a senior special assistant. The patron of the forum, Chief I.A. Sampson, who was represented by Mr Memoye noted that Chief Nyesom Wike is the first Executive Governor since the creation of the state to have given the number three slot of Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly to Abua/Odual ethnic nationality.
He further pointed out that, Wike is the first governor in the state to have appointed two special advisers and a commissioner into his cabinet from the local government area. The forum commended the Governor for the appointment of Barr (Mrs) Ukel Oyaghiri as the commissioner for women affairs as well as Hon Ilamu Arugu, as special adviser on traffic / parks development and Dr Scott Akpilla as a special adviser, pointing out that these appointments speak volumes of the governor’s love for the people of the area.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
