Rotary Club Tasks Nigerian Leaders On Polio Eradication
The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt, District 9141, has tasked Nigerian political leaders to sustain the campaign against polio in the country.
Nigeria was declared polio free in 2020.
Speaking at a lecture put together by the club to mark this year’s International Polio Day in Port Harcourt, a former District Governor of the club, Rotarian Ijeoma Okoro, said there is need for sustained effort to ensure that the dieseas does not find its way back to the country.
She also said the club will not rest until polio ceases to be part of human history.
According to her, Rotary club will not take on any other dieseases until polio is eradicated, stressing that Rotary is creating awareness on the danger of polio.
“There is need for advocacy and sensitisation programm. A lot still need to be done to achieve this”, she said.
According to her, the club is working on a global target of $450 million to check the dieseas.
Also speaking a Consultant with the Word Health Organization (WHO), Evelyn Mbaisi commended Nigeria for the progress made so far in polio eradication.
She said the WHO is working hard to stamp put the dieseas by 2023, adding that the challenges so far is the risk of international spread.
Mbaisi listed the risk to include armed conflict and civil unrest as well as lack of sustained fundings.
She urged for enhanced robust survellianc system for timely detection and response, especially as the diesease has been reported in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Mbaisi commended Rotary club and other partners for their support.
On her part, the President, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt, District 9141, Rotarian Oby Ejezie, urged members to be part of the history of participating, creating awareness and raising funds to kick out polio in the world, calling for support for flood victims.
This year’s ‘’World polio day has as its theme, “A healthier future for mother And Children”.
