COVID-19: Expert Berates Multinationals Over Host Communities’ Neglect
Foremost Environmentalist and Educationist, Engineer OluAndah Wai-Ogosu has berated multinationals and other IOCs operating in Rivers State, particularly in Onne in Eleme Local Government Area over what he described as their ‘’ deliberate indifference’’ towards the plight of their host communities during this period of corona virus pandemic.
The environmentalist who spoke with The Tide in an exclusive interview in Port Harcourt at the weekend, decried the alleged insensitivity of the multinationals towards their host communities, describing it as ‘’culpable negligence’’
The expert said it was expected of the multinationals and IOCs as corporate citizens to complement the efforts of the government through the provision of palliatives and other incentives to cushion the effects of the corona virus pandemic in their host communities.
Using Onne as a case study,he said no company operating in the area has shown any sense of concern towards the plight of the people since the outbreak of the coronavirus which had affected the wellbeing of the people.
As part of their Corporate Social responsibilities, the veteran environmentalist said the companies ought to have done a “swift house hold enumeration’’in their host communities to have clear idea of the vulnerable population to effectively manage the pandemic.
“The corporate bodies have the resources, capabilities, technology and knowledge to effectively manage the corona virus crisis in their host communities, they should embark on house hold enumeration with clear explanation of their intents, it’s part of their Corporate Social Responsibility to ensure that they educate the people, train them and create awareness on healthy, hygienical and safety living, as their negligence is also related to the social welfare deficiencies in the country’’, he said.
Wai-Ogosu, a former National President of the Nigeria Environmental Society(NES), cautioned against what he described as “Eurocentric approach’’ towards addressing the challenges of coronavirus pandemic in the country.
