U-17: CAF Releases AWCON/W’Cup Qualifying Fixtures
Nigeria will face the winner between Guinea or Guinea-Bissau for one of Africa’s three tickets for the women’s U-17 World Cup in India next year.
Despite missing the last edition staged in Uruguay in 2018, Nigeria along with Ghana, Cameroon and South Africa were drawn bye till the second round.
COSAFA U-17 Women’s Cup champions Uganda have been paired with Ethiopia, while Zambia face a daunting trip to Namibia in the CAF U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier preliminary round in January.
The first-round fixtures, which was released after Wednesday’s draw ceremony in Cairo, also see Botswana take on Zimbabwe, while Morocco visit Djibouti.
Tanzania have also been drawn against Burundi, DR Congo get Sao Tome and Principe, and Liberia take on Niger while Guinea face Guinea-Bissau.
Nigeria, who missed out on the last edition in Uruguay in 2018, where Spain emerged champions, will be hoping to return to the tournament and improve on their last outing in Jordan in 2016, where they finished bottom of their group with just a point.
The preliminary ties are scheduled to take place in January 2020, with the first and second leg ties coming between January 10 and 26.
In the qualifying series’ second round, the winner between Namibia and Zambia will face South Africa, while the victor between Botswana/Zimbabwe will take on either Djibouti or Morocco.
Also, the winner of Tanzania/Burundi play Uganda/Ethiopia, while Cameroon gets Sao Tome and Principe or DR Congo, as Ghana get either Liberia or Niger, while Nigeria will face Guinea or Guinea-Bissau.
The second and third-round matches also involving the teams drawn with byes are scheduled to be played in March and May 2020, respectively.
The three winners of the third round automatically book a spot in the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.

PH To Host 2026 NWFL Super Six
In a statement released by the league, the competition is scheduled to take place from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, with six clubs set to battle for the league title at the end of the 2025/26 season.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt reflects the Rivers State Government’s continued support for women’s football and its successful hosting of the league’s Annual General Assembly last year.
The Super Six tournament will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.
Qualified teams for the competition include defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.
The NWFL Premiership has produced four different winners in the last five editions, with Rivers Angels winning in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claiming the title in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphing in 2023, and Edo Queens emerging champions in 2024.
The league also urged participating clubs to comply with all competition regulations and directives ahead of the championship. The Super Six will determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
Teams are expected to arrive on Friday, June 5, when the draw ceremony and pre-match meeting will also take place. Matchdays are scheduled for June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, with rest days in between before the tournament concludes with the trophy presentation ceremony.
