A book on the historical evolution of the Niger Delta region titled “Niger Delta Briefs” written by a renowned medical doctor and an advocate of the Niger Delta struggle, Dr Mofia T. Akobo, has been presented to the public.
Speakers at the programme held last Saturday, in Port Harcourt, used the occasion to eulogise the author, the first Petroleum Minister and former Commissioner in the old River State whom they described as a man with inherent talents and a repository of knowledge and wisdom.
Taking the lead at the event, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt who was the chairman of the occasion, Prof Nimi D. Briggs, described Nigeria as a nation of paradoxes with abundance of natural resources.
Prof. Briggs regretted that Nigeria as a nation does not revere those who contributed to the unity and sustainability of its existence.
According to him, the author deserved to be revered due to his enormous contributions to the growth of the Niger Delta region and the nation at large, and described the book as one that is richer in content when compared with previous books written on the oil rich region.
Also speaking, the book reviewer, Prof Derefaka described the book as very educative and enriched with the history of the people of Niger Delta, adding that the region bears the burden of the entire country.
He opined that the book chronicled the origins of the Niger Delta and recommended the use of the book for all professions and in all institutions across the region.
In his own speech, the Chief Launcher, Mr Odoliyi Lolomari, described the author as an independent minded person, adding that he was impressed with the quality and content of the book.
He urged people to leave a legacy that would speak for them when they are no more adding that the author has left a legacy through the book.
“The book speaks of his ideas, thoughts and visions in some topical issues and will be used to remember him when he is no more. The knowledge embedded in the book are enormous and enriching,” he added.
Also speaking, the publisher of the book, Prof E.J Alagoa, said the book captued the Author’s views as well as his expressions on various contributions and service rendered to the growth of the nation and promised to effect all the various sentiments expressed by speakers about the book in subsequent printing.
